An inspiring documentary portrait of performer/activist Harry Belafonte.

Harry Belafonte was the first recording artist to sell a million LP records. By the late 1950’s, he was one of the World’s most famous performers. But Belafonte's talent - his truest calling - was in using his fame with remarkable effectiveness to right the wrongs of social injustice. Throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s Belafonte was tirelessly active in the Civil Rights movement in America, journeying through the South with his good friend, Sidney Poitier along with other friends, including Marlon Brando. Belafonte stood on the front lines of social activism thoughout his lifetime from the streets of Capetown to the streets of South Central L.A. to the Oval Office.

This brilliant film explores Belafonte's career and activism, including the significant challenges he faced as an early, black performer on National television - where Harry and CBS were confronted by sponsors, offended when Harry touched Petula Clark - a white woman. The film tracks Belafonte’s rise to stardom alongside the significant contributions to and his leadership alongside Martin Luther King, John Lewis and others in the civil rights movement in America to social justice globally.

Particularly in these divided times, Belafonte’s voice and actions strike a resounding chord with a singular voice that never stops chanting “yes we can!"
