MAY 17 · FILMS TO SEE BEFORE YOU DIE
The Bridge on the River Kwai
A film by David Lean
w/ William Holden, Alec Guinness, Jack Hawkins

Rated PG
2hr 41min

British POWs are forced to build a railway bridge across the river Kwai for their Japanese captors in occupied Burma, not knowing that the allied forces are planning a daring commando raid through the jungle to destroy it. From the acclaimed director of Lawrence of Arabia, David Lean.

There are very few examples each year of cinematic enterprises that are carried out with such intelligence and above all with such care. But the quality of this film must ultimately be put in its artistic place, and that place is not the highest.
André Bazin
Cahiers du Cinéma

One of the great, action-packed epics of the late 50s, The Bridge on the River Kwai is an exceptional case study about the hysteria of war and the pride that comes before the fall.
