Including an enlightening Q & A discussion with Screenwriter James V. Hart who joined us last
summer with Contact and Coppola’s Dracula.
“Listen… can you hear it? The music… I can hear it everywhere… it’s all around us. All you have
to do is open yourself up. All you have to do is listen.”
With these words, an orphan played by Freddie Highmore (in perhaps his greatest
performance) launches this musical journey of the heart – where music and intuition are
inextricably bound together to create magic while reuniting a family. This extraordinary,
contemporized fable uses music as a powerful metaphor for the intangible connections
between people and the way music can guide and shape lives as a force for good.
The performances by a stellar cast are exquisitely realized, including a remarkable turn by Robin
Williams as a Dickensian character who nurtures Highmore’s orphan to discover his prodigious
musical talent, empowering him to reunite with his long-lost parents, played by Keri Russell and
Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
This film is a “Hollywood Movie” in the best sense – where its deeper sentiments are actualized
through music, performances, inspired writing and direction that drives this film to an uplifting,
inspirational finale that sweeps us away in an emotional and cathartic validation of the power
of a love story in the key of life.
